How to sight in a rifle scope

2025-11-04 6 min read Author: LK-Optoelectronic

Peer through a rifle scope and distant things look near. It will help enhance your aim out in the field or during target practice. But it all starts with one thing: setting up your rifle scope correctly. This is the “sighting in” of your scope.

Rifle Scopes Basics

Rifle Scopes Rifle scopes are magic telescope things that make you be able to see things clear when you’re aiming your gun. Thanks to special lenses, they magnify the image from inside, which can make it easier to hit your shooting goal. The numbers on the sight are telling you the degree to which it will magnify stuff. If, for instance, it reads “4x,” things will appear four times closer.

Wind Elevation Is Adjustable to Some Point

It might be a different story the first time you mount a rifle scope on your rifle. You can adjust the windage and elevation to center the crosshairs (the little “+” sign) where your shots are landing on the paper. Muzzle Elevation adjusts the crosshairs up/down, windage moves the crosshairs left and right. Until your shots are landing at home, you can fine tune by turning the dials of the scope.

Initial Alignment with a Boresighter

You can get your scope on paper with a boresighter before you head to the range. A boresighter is a tool to assist you with the scope on the barrel of your gun. Then, when you look in the device, your optic should point the same direction as your barrel. That way when you begin firing, your shots are close to where you’re aiming.

How to precisely zero your scope & fine tuning for long range shooting – juicy micro adjustments for sharpshooter?

After getting your scope dialed in to the extent you desire with the boresighter, the next step is to zero that scope in and make the sight picture even better. Fire your weapon at a target at a distance of as close as 25 yards. Burn a few rounds and see what you can do with them. Then click the windage and elevation knobs until the crosshairs are centered in the group. Continue to adjust and shoot until your shafts are going directly into the bullseye. This takes use, but it’s something you want to do if you want to be a better shot.

How to maintain a zero on a scope in the field?

When you have zeroed your rifle scope, it is important to know how to make it hold zero as you take it to the field and hunt and shoot with it. Here are a few to help you get your scope dialed in:

Every time you start shooting, confirm the sight of your scope. Verify that it is still tight on the gun and has not shifted.

· Be gentle with your gun. Abuse can throw the range out of whack.

· Keep your scope clean. It can get jammed up with dust and dirt, be scratched and dented, all of which can affect how it spins.

· Keep it tight and stay zeroed in on your target.

Just remember, practice is the most important part of working with a rifle scope. Soon, and stick with it, you’ll be landing dead center every time. The only way to see your target in crystal-clear detail is with an LK-Optoelectronic Optimal... Rifle Scope!
